If you’re looking for a quiet, charming place to recharge your batteries in Finnish Lapland, we highly recommend Ounasvaara, a small hill just a few hundred metres from the city centre of Rovaniemi. We had the chance to visit this hidden gem, and it quickly became one of our favorite spots. Nestled in the heart of a forest, Ounasvaara offers breathtaking views over the town, especially during golden hour — that magical moment when the sun sets and bathes the landscape in a warm, golden glow.
One of the highlights of Ounasvaara is its observation tower, which provides a stunning 360-degree panoramic view. When we reached the top, we were in awe of the vast, wild beauty of Lapland — the endless forests stretching in every direction, and, in the distance, the tiny town of Rovaniemi beneath the vast Lapland sky. It was the perfect spot to pause, breathe, and take in nature in all its splendour.

A peaceful place to escape
At the foot of the tower, we discovered a charming laavu, a traditional wooden shelter, where you can grill sausages and marshmallows over an open fire. What made it even better was the nearby wood shed, always fully stocked, so there’s no need to worry about running out of firewood for your meal.
When we came in November, the snow was just beginning to blanket the landscape, but we are told that the best time to visit is between February and March, when the snow fully covers the hill and its paths. Regardless of the season, this peaceful retreat is always worth the visit. The trails are wide and slightly steep, but the effort is more than worth it once you reach the summit and are rewarded with the breathtaking views.

For us, Ounasvaara was the perfect place to escape and reconnect with nature. It’s a spot where you can truly listen to the silence of the forest, breathe in the fresh air, and feel a deep sense of peace — no matter the time of year.
