Although it seems to have no point in doing it, the Ice Fishing Trip is one of our most famous tours. Why that? Because you can enjoy the nature and silence of Finnish Lapland! It is a very special and unique experience that many Finns do every year.
We just had another tour where we picked up our guests and drove them to a beautiful frozen lake. This huge white open space offers an amazing view of the winter landscape, especially nice when it is snowing like this time. And this lake is well known under locals as they come here often to do ice fishing.
So, after arriving at the lake we showed our guests how to drill the hole, how to use and hold the fishing rod and that’s it! This is the essence of ice fishing which is why anyone can do it, you don’t need any experience.
Now, our guests just had to sit down and wait. Wait… and wait…and wait a little more and perhaps then you are lucky and get a bite. This day our guests weren’t lucky but that doesn’t matter.
Catching a fish is in fact only a bonus, the idea behind ice fishing is mainly enjoying the nature and silence. It is almost like a form of meditation: you should not think too much and just relax.
But because you spend a long time sitting without moving (because fishes can feel even the tiniest vibrations), you can get cold easily. And so did our guests that day. But lucky for them that we already prepared a nice fire and hot drinks to warm up.
Now you know what ice fishing is really about and how to do it. But as always, you have to try it yourself to really get that feeling of complete silence and peace around you.
