17 December 2020: Amazing Northern Lights show in the sky!
After weeks of cloudy skies, we finally got a clear night and a KP level 3 which meant for us: we will go out to chase Northern Lights! Today, we had to people from Belgium joining us on our Aurora hunt.
We drove them north, away from the city of Rovaniemi. Apart from a clear sky, being away from any light pollution is one of the most important things when hunting Northern Lights.
As the weather forecast predicted a crystal clear sky, we knew it would get freezing cold. But when first stepping out of the car, it was a shock anyways. At -22 degrees you really have to be dressed warm.
However, although we could see an amazing starry night sky, we weren’t able to see any Northern Lights at our first two locations. So, we drove further north to a beautiful frozen lake.
As soon as we arrived there, we could see a pale green arch at the horizon. The first sign of Northern Lights! But because it didn’t seem like it was going to change any time soon, we decided to light up a fire first. By now we were all cold, so we could really use the fire and something warm to drink and eat.
While having our campfire, we always kept an eye on the sky to see if the Northern Lights would get any stronger. During this time we shared stories and legends behind this phenomenon with our guests. We explained different beliefs around the world but also the scientific background of the Aurora Borealis.
And then suddenly we got lucky. The Northern Lights gave us a beautiful show, stronger than before and dancing over the sky. As our guests experienced this for the first time, it was quite impressive for them. But for us as well because the light show is never the same.
We could take many pictures, capturing the beautiful starry sky with the Auroras dancing. On the camera, we could even see some red Auroras over the green ones. Truly magical!
We all agreed that we could do this until morning. But after admiring the Northern Lights for quite some time, we had to head back to Rovaniemi.
